Since 2006, Tony Van Den Tillaart has been growing certified organic spelt on Aartista Farm near Armstrong, BC. Though SOL Farm was intended to be a 'working retirement' project, Ramona and Stephen soon found the pride of producing a wide variety of organic foods for their community too addictive to resist and have continued it as a full time endeavour. Helping them bring delicious vegetables, fruits, herbs, and beautiful flowers to the residents of Vancouver Island are their son Jeremy and his girlfriend Jessica, who also live on the farm. Vancouver Island Salt Co. was established in January 2010 by Andrew Shepherd. After more than a decade as a chef, working in top restaurants and catering companies across Canada, South Australia, and an award winning run in Feilding, New Zealand at Sage Cafe, it was time for a change. For the last two years, Andrew has been dedicated to the world of gourmet retail foods, where the idea for V.I.S.C. was formed. Andrew and V.I.S.C. are excited to be able to add something unique to BC's thriving local food scene, while at the same time offering products that are all natural and sustainable. Offering grain fed beef, pork, lamb and veal from Westholme Farms. All animals are fed home grown forage with no added hormones, and no animal by-products. Westholme Farms operates its own feedmill. There are also a variety of fresh and frozen products, spices, deli items, meat pies and more in store. Hilary's Cheese was founded in 2001 by Hilary and Patty Abbott. Located in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island - the Abbott's are pleased to partner with local producers of quality cow and goat's milk in order to produce full flavored delicious dairy products. Hope Farm offers "a restorative farming community grounded in Christian Practice that offers a sanctuary of hope." Through engagement in the community and contributing to the work of caring for the land and the animals on it. In 2011 they added wheat to their farm to augment the eggs and vegetables available at their farm store and local farmers markets. Aartista Farms Dirk and Bea Keller have been farming at Sloping Hill Farm since 2000. They are best known for their free range heritage pork and sustainable farming practices. In 2013 the farm became the first certified organic grain farm on Vacouver Island where they grow ancient grains and oats. |
